Journal entries
Post manual debit and credit lines to the ledger.
A journal entry records a manual accounting movement — for example opening balances, corrections, or accruals that are not created by a sale or purchase.
Debits and credits on the entry must balance before you can post.
What you need first
| What you need | Where it appears |
|---|---|
| Location | Header of the journal |
| Chart of accounts | Each line’s account |
| Line Location | Each debit/credit line |
Setup: Chart of accounts · Locations
Creating a journal entry
- Go to Accounts > Journal Entry
- Click + Add
- Set the Date and header Location
- Add lines — each line needs an account, location, and either a Debit or Credit amount (and an optional memo)
- Check that total debit equals total credit
- Save (draft) or submit
ℹ️
Sales, purchases, and vouchers post to the ledger automatically. Use journals only when there is no matching operational document.
